What he really wanted to do was bring attention to lao food. Lao food is overshadowed by thai food even though it's very similar and some popular Thai food actually originated in laos. There's no better way to bring attention to a subject than being controversial. He successfully got people interested in lao food.

There is really no need to debate who owns a particular type of food. The entire Southeast Asia is an amalgamation of our many fascinating characters and cultures. Iโ€™m Thai and we are right smack in the middle. People living close to the borders often speak dialects that resemble those of countries on the other side and make similar styles of dishes. I love all the foods from all over the continent and consider myself really lucky. In terms of history, geography, and politics, there is no use debating over those things because it really depends on who wrote the references. People have this habit of not wanting to be bad guys nor losers in any story so they made sure their stories were told exactly the way they wanted. All we know for sure is that there were hundreds if not thousands of years of greed, battles, killing and plundering, threats, colonization, oppression, and people getting mutilated and killed, and families torn apart, resulting in what the continent looks like today.

I used to work with a Lao man. He asked me if Iโ€™d ever had Laos food and I told him Iโ€™d never had it. He asked if I liked Thai foodโ€ฆI told him yes. He then told me, โ€œwhat you think is Thai food is laos food. We cook it all anywaysโ€ I donโ€™t know how accurate that is.
