Uncle Roger took us back like 900 episodes. Also, Sanji automatically gets the Uncle title.
Uncle Sanji do be sounding like the person you let him cook
@@gerditwin1828and the person youβd wanna get a restraining order against. All and all, perfect title for the man
Back when One Piece was actually good.
β@@consume_vegetablesOne Piece has always been good. It was a little boring at the start like this episode.
@@consume_vegetables opposite for me. The pre climax episodes of those arcs were boring but they got better overtime. To each their own opinion ig
For context; since Sanji is a pirate, he refused to directly give advice to the marine kid and only helped indirectly.
Yep. consorting with pirates in any way is a critical offense in the Navy. If the kid were caught he'd be kicked out, or worse: court martialed.
One more reason Sanji didn't teach the kid it's because Sanji himself didn't experience any tutoring from Zeff. He's just trying to do the same
Sanji learned to cook from Red Leg by kicks to the head lol maybe he just didn't want to start kicking the shit out of the little kid lol
That is not the reason. Sanji couldn't care less about it, it's just the way he learnt to cook, so he does the same with this kid. Cooking with a recipe is easy, learning the skills to do it without is what's hard when you are a chef
He knows the kid knows how to do it, but he also knows that you learn best by figuring it out yourself so just being told "The heat is too high, you are gonna burn the onions" He might forget next time. Him remembering the lesson means he will remember next time too. You dont generally give someone the answers, you lead them to discover the answers themselves.
i feel bad for complaining back then how the animation was bad but just watching this video made me realize how much they focus on every small detail and the fact that they had to pump out episode every week
It was made in the early 2000s what did u expect π
Your wrong bro these animations are still better than seven deadly sins last season and black clover half possessed devil arc (120-150)
@@thxio7226 nah black clover was fine except for fighting scenes
What makes it crazier is that this is a filler episode
Apples not only add a subtle flavor but they contain pectin which is a natural thickener. Itβs used often in fruit pie making and canning for jams.
Looking to see if anyone knew this before I made a comment. Apple has the quickest releasing pectin of any other fruit I know. Citrus and berries take a very long time to extract, but apple is very quick. Itβs also the second or third ingredient on S&B roux cubes from memory, after flour and vegetable fats.
Didn't know that. Thanks, Haukea!
Correct, pears too.
π€
I was wondering whether the "body" here refer to flavour or texture. He said something like "koku janai" and according to dictionary "koku" means rich flavour. Given that definition, adding apples wouldn't be able to fix it.
I love that Nigel is so committed to the character that even his bloopers, transitions and parts to be cut are exclusively "Uncle Roger."
I just wish he'd done his meet and greets after his live shows as Uncle Roger. It would have been fun.
Sanji was actually raised in a restaurant surrounded by chefs, his adopted father was a chef who was a pirate captain, so he is basically a master chef

Fun fact oda the creator of one piece made sure that all recipes and food from one piece could actually be made and he made them himself to make it more realistic
Context: the boy was so nervous because this was the first time the head chef allowed him to cook and he was going to cook for some high ranking marines
Yeah this was his promotion exam. If he does a good job with the curry he is another official cooking student. if it sucks, thats another 6 months or so as the dishwasher trying to learn by overhearing him instruct the others. He may still do dishes until a new kid comes along, but he will also be getting directly taught and expected to make food, prep ingredients, etc. Few years he will be on his own ship as the cook and be letting the dishwasher overhear him talking to his own assistants.
the reason Sanji didn't tell him anything is because he was testing the kid to see if he knew what he was doing wrong without actually telling him he was doing something wrong, Sanji is probably the best chef in the anime he has trained since he was younger than that kid that's how he knows so much, i think he saw some of himself in that kid so he wanted to helping him without actually telling him what he was doing wrong.
the reason Sanji helped him is because the kid said his dream was to find the All Blue, the same dream Sanji has and both were mocked by other chefs for believing it's real. Zeff saved and raised Sanji because he too shared the dream to find the All Blue.
so i was right then, he saw himself in the boy so he wanted to help him without actually telling him.
thanks for the extra context though, it's been ages since i seen that episode.@@noumenonification
@@FuryousD yup! sorry if my comment came off as correcting you I just wanted to add on the reason. I only recently started the series after giving up on it 10 years ago but falling in love again after the live action so yeah the east blue is still fresh in my mind
Watching this episode of One Piece with Sanji teaching a cook rookie how to make curry is really making me want some right now lol
Same. I tried Japanese curry, itβs great
the curry⦠the curry is real
Funny.... It's making me want tacos?!?
God this episode takes me back. It's little filler episodes like this, (and the g8 arc) that makes the anime worth taking a look at as a reader of the manga.
Considering this was just after Alabasta, little standalone episodes like this were necessary. Though usually when they have a small battery of standalone episodes like this it's always Sanji who gets the best ones.
Watching uncle roger is actually really inspiring because he tells when the ingridient is wrong or correct
When I was a bit younger, I was inspired by sanjis cooking, so I wanted to be a chef...
I trained to be one even, but the place I trained at felt like a prison, so I ended up leaving.
Idk if I even want to try again, I think i'd rather learn how to cook at home and maybe open a restaurant one day!
My respect goes out to all the chefs out there, the dedication, discipline and will to keep learning and improving ones cooking is something I deeply admire.
I will eventually be free from my current situation which restricts most of what I can freely do
(talking about a private situation/problem i'm facing).
When that day arrives, i'll be able to focus on my cooking and all other things I want to do right now, I can only imagine all the experiences I will make, for now, just the thought of what awaits me in the future makes me happy :D
Apples contain pectin which is a thickener. It's used mainly to thicken jam/jelly. I don't know how well it holds up to heat but if you grated a few apples into it they would change the consistency.
Apples dissolve into the sauce if you cook them long enough; so long as he didn't add them at the very end he should have small enough pieces that they cook down, but if you add them too late you might get strings of apple in the final product.
It's a question of where you want the sugar - if you want the sugar to be subtle and well-married with everything else, add it to the end of caramelizing the onions. If you want to taste apple front and center, add closer to the end.
Its actually also something done with bolognese!
Italian bolognese has various vegetables in it that are roasted along with the onions and meat, then allowed to simmer. The cell walls eventaully break down and it dissolves into the food. You then generally add some water from the spaghetti (which itself also contains starch), which gives it a velvety texture.
@@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger in a curry i imagine you want that blend of balanced flavors not something sharp cutting through all other tastes, so I'd add in with the onions personally.
Sanji was thought about food by the greatest chef in the world
He is a harsh teacher but he is taking care of the boy well, Sanji understands that the boy while being a dish washer he always is at the kitchen so he would have heard everything about how to cook so Sanji is helping him to remember all what he learned true hearing Sanji knows that cause he use to be a dish washer who listened to the chefs
To give some context to why Sanji was all mysterious and didn't just tell the kid what to do, its because thats how he himself learnt how to cook at the restaurant he used to work at. He was around the same age as the kid, but the head chef didn't baby him and guide him step by step, in fact he rarely showed him himself how to do certain things, so Sanji was always observing him cook and bit by bit learned his secrets. This is actually something more common in real life then some people think, when it comes to cooking, you pick up skills by observing other chefs at work.
Well said.
This is how my husband learned to do things by just observing, like cooking, playing guitar and tattooing.
Sanji didnt want to directly teach him cuz Sanji is a pirate and that kid was working for the Marines. You dont have to dig in too deep.
That plus Chef Zeff kick his ass if he screwed up.
@@JayDLaw yes, it's Oda, he hides so much symbolism in his stories, you absolutely can dig in as deep as you want LOL
Too be fair, this is the first time this kid has ever cooked the meal himself and its for the captain and his officers. This is literally going to decide if he is the dishwasher for another 6 months or might get some real chef training rather than being expected to learn by listening while scrubbing pans. Being really nervous in that scenario makes perfect sense. His promotion is on the line. But yeah, i always love it when One Piece talks food.
An interesting tidbit, every Japanese Naval base has their own unique curry.
This reminds me of a Filipino dish, Its called βKalderetaβ. The curry that they cooked and kaldereta are very similar.
Incredible how One Piece isnt at all a cooking manga and almost got nothing wrong. Oda is a mad perfectionist, every day my respect for the man grows
Fun Fact: if you swap Sanji's syllables to Jisan, it means 'Uncle' π
I always like the cooking scenes in One Piece I didn't know they were taking it so seriously, the fact that Uncle Roger could point out each of the spices was awesome. This is why One Piece is Goat piece and also definitely Sanji is Uncle Sanji now he definitely passed.
Everything about Uncle Roger's criticism had me dying π€£π€£π
You can tenderize meat without boiling through marination.
Some marinades have enzymes ( proteases ) to break meat such as pineapple.
So you tenderize meat and add flavor in one step.
I like how Uncle Roger asks why the kid is sweating yet he completely ignores the entirety of the episode around it where the plot is this kid spilled Bishop's Curry that they were making for a competition between him and a few other captains so he's literally having to remake it for the sake of a competition.
not only that but the obvious thing is how working in a kitchen will make you sweat, you're physically active, in uniform, and everything there produces heat, stoves, pots, pans. I'm a former professional cook btw
The details in this scene are fantastic because OP is an action adventure anime not a cooking anime and they nailed it.
The fact that it is more accurate than many cooking channels shows the attention to detail.
Oda probably loves Curry, so he knew how to make it.
β@@UltimateGamerCCNot sure he wrote this episode though, it's a filler. Regardless, Oda is very cultured, so I wouldn't be surprised if he knew how to cook japanese curry.
Most YT channels will always measure the amount of ingredients to cook, which is time consuming to get the right amount. I just straight up toss the ingredients when it feels right. "Use the right amount Not the white amount" - Uncle Roger I forgor date πππ.
Its impressive when you also know that this is just a filler episode, the staff really spent time into researching just for an early filler episode, props to the Toei staff on this
Sanji hinting on how to cook is part of the story. That boy is requested by the Marines to cook curry for them since he spilled the original curry to be served.
That boy requested Sanji to oversee his cooking without helping him do the cooking, thus, the hints.
Sanji is the cook of the Strawhat Pirates, and most probably the best cook in One Piece universe.
Uncle Roger x One Piece haiyaaaa haha
After watching the live action one piece today, seeing him do that close up eye shot aged perfectly lmao π
For some context, I believe the Marine in training kid had dropped a big pot of curry and some IMPORTANT guests were waiting on it, that's why Sanji was helping but not directly, as Sanji is a pirate and not even supposed to be there. The kid was stressing tf out cuz it had to be PERFECT of course.

i never thought one day id see someone reviewing one piece cooking. it was like one filler episode in the earlier days some 900 episodes ago.
I cooked beef curry a few days ago using S&B flavoring. I messed up a few minor things like how the potatoes and carrots should be cut and also didn't use beef broth, just the little beef bouillon cubes. I used pressure cooker to tenderize the meat, but made sure to sear it first before boiling it to render the fat and release the flavor.
Still successful though. My family's faces all lit up when they tasted it.
that's the best feeling when you cook, I miss it
Indonesian Curry surely different compared to Japanese and Indian. We use coconut milk and chicken meat here, the turmeric made the colour yellowish here but not as thick and probably lighter, sometimes we filled it with Potato, but most of the time just Tofu and or Tempe
8:16, here in the US in Louisiana we use roux in a lot of dishes, my personal favorite being, Gumbo, usually made with a roux, sausage, chicken, and spices.
I'd also suggest trying a Cajun crawfish boil, if it's done well there's no going back
I've tried Isaac Toups Gumbo on KRclip, easier than I thought to make and first time eating Gumbo, so good
I think they use roux a lot in European cuisines too. Especially the French Ig (isn't "roux" a French word?)
@@kdjoshi726 , I'm fairly sure it is, partly due to what Cajuns are, and the language "Cajun" which my mother, great grandmother, and uncle all know, which I've noticed similarities to French when its being spoken. And yes, a lot of European cuisines use roux
β@@kdjoshi726New Orleans has french heritage!
there aren't that many episodes where Sanji shows his cooking but the ones where he does are great, i know there is one in the East Blue saga where he enters a cooking competition for a fish that is not normally found in the East Blue (the world is split into 4 different oceans, 2 strips of ocean named the calm belt that separates North and South and the Grand Line and the New World which is in-between them).
u should definitely watch that episode next.
The time he got into a competition with the entire cookstaff at a marine base and had to make food for 100 people was an excellent episode about the philosophy of cooking and what it means to cook for an entire base rather than for yourself or your family. THAT was an excellent set of scenes.
Thatβs in logue town

Clearly Roger doesnβt have much kitchen experience, when I worked in a cafe, I sweated all the time due to how hot it was, and I wasnβt even cooking, I was washing the dishes next to an open window with cool air coming in, I was still boiling
and the kid is in an exam at that, stressful to say the least, been there..
Ahhh, One Piece and Uncle Roger. The collaboration I didnβt know I needed until I got it
Apple has Pectin in it which is a natural gelatin like ingredient so it would thicken the curry.
Almost ALL ship cooks are not fat. Most ships have a small galley (name for a kitchen on a ship). Its different for luxury liners or massive ships as they have the space & need for big galleys. Old saying on land "never trust a thin cook", old saying by sailors "never trust a fat ships cook".
I literally had this episode on pause and then stumbled across the video and I immediately watched the episode before watching this so I dont get any spoilers πππ i get why the boy was soo nervous and sanji was great! β€
The reason Sanji isn't giving the kid direct help is because Sanji is a Pirate, and the kid is a Marine. They're natural enemies, and Sanji ended up aboard the Marines ship. He wasn't obligated to help, but he wanted to. Love this episode.. and love the reaction!
Its not even so much that; Tajio wouldn't really have "learned" if Sanji was holding his hand the whole way.
By letting him figure it out himself, Tajio TRULY learned through his own experience, with minimal direct help.

Actually the apple is super correct, but they didn't show how to use it. Much like korean marinades use pear for sweetness, japanese curry (like vermont) use blended apples for the pectin to thicken the curry and the fructose to add a depth of sweetness and flavor. That's an easy way at the middle stages of cooking to introduce more flavor and get the consistency you're looking for if it isn't quite nappe.
This is very interesting as someone who grew up eating curry every day but this is so novel and alien to me
Uncle Roger, the reason why the kid is sweating is because hes worried that they won't like the curry. Considering he ended up spilling it the first time. And that's why you had to remake it. In short notice. Also, this is one piece, a world about pirates. Sanji is a cook for Luffy The dude with the stretch, your arms. Luffy is the main character. I thought it hilarious when you skipped him entirely.
With how deep OP goes into cooking at times, Uncle Roger would probably enjoy it.

He brought the one piece fandom down a good memory lane, good job Uncle Rojer
Garam Masala is used in Indian curries....garam means hot and masala means spices....how did Uncle Roger missed it
he knows, they use it in other cuisine too
Yes I thought this was Indian curry at first, with the garam spices, the youghurt marinade, the ginger/garlic/onions, then I read the title properly.
Actually some (rarely) indian curries use roux but not with animal fat though it's usually oil +chickpea flour. In some curries like bombay chutney, mushroom gravies. we do use roux but not many people know such recipes.
thatβs why one piece is masterpiece even tho this isnβt a cooking showβ€π
Uncle Roger may be pleased to know that Sanji (the tall, handsome chef) is not only an excellent chef, but an excellent fighter too! But, because Sanji is such a good chef, he never fights using his hands, because a chef's hands must always be clean and in good shape, so he only fights using kicks! Except for that one time where he fought against an enemy that could transform into a noodle monster, and because he was technically food, he fought him with knives and proved that he is also an excellent swordsman.
